Hotokegaura

Shimokita Peninsula, Aomori, Japan

If there's one place that's made an incurably lasting impression on us here in Japan, it was the Shimokita-hanto in Aomori.

Mystical beautiful and remote nature. It'll forever be one of our best memories of Japan. Here's an image from a summer road trip. Sunset at Hotokegaura - a series of rock formations along the sea cliffs on the west coast of Shimokita Peninsula at the entrance to Mutsu Bay in far northern Japan. ⠀

Quite spectacular to see - extending a 1.5 kilometre stretch of coastline in the village of Sai, in Aomori Prefecture. ⠀

Individual features have been named for figures in Buddhist theology. We stopped here on our way home from Mt Osore. Another unbelievable and unique Japanese experience.⠀
⠀
And then we had paralysing bear fear on the hike back ... ask us about it one day ;-)⠀
